Furniture: FAQAre there covers available for my Barlow Tyrie furniture? Barlow Tyrie now offers a line of covers designed exclusively to fit their furniture. They can be ordered for your specific pieces. What is the weathering process of Barlow Tyrie teakwood furniture? Over time in an outdoor environment, untreated teak will weather to a silver-gray. The length of time will vary with exposure to different climatic conditions. Why does new teak furniture sometimes have 'wild' dark or orange stripes? These markings are perfectly normal and will disappear within a few days, following exposure to the UV spectrum in natural sunlight. These marks are commonly found following the kilning process, which is used to lower the moisture content of the timber prior to manufacture. This process minimizes the incidence of small cracks appearing in the furniture due to the changes in temperature and humidity that it encounters in an outdoor environment. Why do occasional cracks appear on my Barlow Tyrie teak furniture? Teakwood is a natural material and as such fine cracks in the end grain of components, e.g. legs and arms, may appear and then disappear with changes in the weather and the consequent change in the moisture content of the wood. Such fine cracks are normal, especially in heavier components, and will not affect the life or serviceability of your furniture. Do I need to oil my Barlow Tyrie teak furniture? Treating with teak oil or other preservatives is not necessary; it will not extend the life of your furniture and is purely cosmetic. We do not recommend oiling your furniture as it creates unnecessary maintenance. However, if you wish to preserve the 'just bought' look of your furniture you should apply teak oil or wood stain when the furniture is new. Follow the manufacturer's recommended application and properly dispose of oil-soaked rags as they are highly combustible. How do you clean Barlow Tyrie teak? Even after teakwood has weathered, you can enhance the color by washing with soapy water to remove accumulated dirt. If you use a pressure hose with a fan or multi-nozzle jet, take care. Set the pressure at 900-1200 psi and maintain a distance of 6-8" between the nozzle and the surface to be cleaned. Pressure washers can damage wood if used incorrectly. Care should be taken not to direct the water jet directly into joints. To remove grease spots we recommend a degreasing agent and gentle scrubbing brush, rinsing off with clean water. Will the metal fittings on my Barlow Tyrie teak furniture last as long as the teak? Barlow Tyrie only uses the best marine quality solid brass and stainless steel on their furniture. Neither rusts or deteriorates with age. Do I need to store my teak furniture during the winter? No, Barlow Tyrie teak furniture can be left outdoors, uncovered, all year round. If you choose to cover your furniture outdoors during the winter then you should use a material that allows the wood to breathe such as Barlow Tyrie's outdoor furniture covers. Do I need to use a base if I am locating a parasol through a dining table? Yes, all parasols must be located in the recommended parasol base for safety reasons. We supply both above and below-ground bases to suit different locations. What is the fabric used in the Horizon and Equinox lines? The Barlow Tyrie Horizon slings are made from Jacquatex; a durable and tough material woven from polyester yarn coated with PVC that will withstand years of outdoor use. The Barlow Tyrie Equinox slings have a more open weave and are made from Textilene, a durable and tough material, woven from polyester yarn coated with PVC. It will withstand years of outdoor use. How do you clean cushion and parasol fabrics? One of the best ways to maintain your cushion or parasol fabrics is to hose them off on a monthly basis during the summer season with clean water. This practice will help prevent dirt from becoming deeply imbedded in the fabric and eliminate the need for more vigorous cleaning at a later date. In most environments thorough cleaning will be needed every year prior to the summer season. How do you clean a parasol canopy on the frame? Parasol canopies should be cleaned on the frame and not be washed in a machine.
How do you clean Barlow Tyrie cushion covers? We recommend leaving cushion covers on the cushions for cleaning rather than removing and putting them in a washing machine.
If stubborn stains persist, you can use a diluted chlorine bleach/soap mixture for spot cleaning of mildew and other similar stains. Prepare a special cleaning mixture and proceed as follows:
